Question: If I am going to spray latex paint all over my basement hopefully-soon-to-be art studio room (walls and ceilings) do I need to shut off the gas furnace? Or the pilot light in the water heater? This is a small room (maybe 12 x 12) where the water heater and the furnace are. I will probably frame in a small closet around both of these eventually, mabye even before I paint. I know that with any other sort of noxious (oils, etc.) I'd need to make sure I have no sources of ignition when I paint, but I'm thinking that with latex this won't be an issue.

Who knows about this stuff? Show me the love, people.

I don't know about this stuff, but you can probably get a good answer in the saucydwellings community. They're very helpful.

when in doubt -- turn off the pilot light. i wouldn't take chances with this.

not sure- but I would consider painting with a roller, out of concern that the aerosolized paint would end up inside the furnace, not to mention the outside. If you keep the heaters off for long in frigid weather, you risk frozen pipes, too. just a thought.

If it's latex then you should be okay. If it's oil or thinner based, kaboom! As long as you can thin it with water, it's all good.

You are probably done by now, but I believe tsarina is right; if it is latex, it should be all right, if you have a window or some kind of ventlation, it might be better; depends on the type of paint. This coming from an "unexpert" but I wouldn't worry about latex.

Go to the DIY site, maybe?

A "pro" should answer your question within two days.

I think it's just DIY.com
