Queen of Trials

I got rid of seven, count 'em, SEVEN cases today! I feel like the brave little tailor...for any you old enough to get that reference. Seven jury trials set today and every single one of them pled, including a child rapist and a drug dealer. I gave out a couple of major legal ass whoopin's over the last couple of weeks, including the whole "caught ya lyin' on the stand, bitch" episode. Maybe all the defense attorneys were afraid I had jailhouse phonecalls of their clients confessing. Who knows? All I know is that I've got a nice easy week to look forward to for a change!

Oh, and my phone's all screwed up at home. I just realized that tonight when I couldn't get any phone calls. Will see to that tomorrow, but don't worry if you can't get me.

I'm a felony prosecutor. It's not that dangerous. Depressing, maddening, and confounding some days--but not usually dangerous.

usually is right! I do have a friend or two who've had 'hits' planned against them- thankfully halted and prosecuted. One was orchestrated from within the jail during the past year. To this day, I'm glad people don't really recognize me easily when I'm not in a suit- it always made me nervous when I went shopping and some person would stare at me long and hard in a place like Sam's Club- my mind would start flipping through the mugs shots, ya know? ;)

I'm pretty lucky because I live in a different county than the one where I prosecute. I've had a couple of threats and the like, and I've got a few "notify upon release" orders on file at several prisons around the state. Most of the real criminals understand the rules of the game. It's the amateurs and freaks that get on that whole revenge trip. I joke, though, that there's several people I'm going to probably end up having to shoot on my doorstep once they get out of prison.

Well, I do have a pretty morbid sense of humor sometimes, but that's not uncommon in this line of work...sort of that "if I don't laugh, I'll cry" humor. Overall, though, I don't think it's made me more cynical about people. I see the best and the worst of what people are. If anything, I think it's really helped me to see the balance of the universe a bit more clearly.

I had a filipino friend in high school. His sisters were raised in a rather strict catholic upbrining... very sheltered from the world, limited in what they could see on TV. The oldest sister after high school went on to become a nurse. When she was doing her interning, she was working in a maternity ward. She was shocked to discover women were having children outside of wed lock. This is like 1990. That is a sheltered life.

Man alive! That's mind-blowing. I know there are people who live so far removed from things that they couldn't even imagine them, but it still shocks me.
