Today has been one of those days that's everything fall should be...the kind of day where you take a big bite of caramel apple in the morning and that feeling stays with you as long as you need it. Walked into the post office around ten, hair piled up all higgledy-piggledy on top of my head, in my favorite pair of vintage 40's slacks and a black turtleneck. An old man came up behind me as I was talking to the post office guy...shooting the breeze while I was getting my stamps. He was beautiful, probably in his late seventies or early eighties. One of these fabulous old guys who still gets dressed to the nines to go downtown. Full head of white hair. He smelled like lavender and shook a little as he walked. All the post office guys seemed to know him...just like they know me. He opened a little bag of peppermint sticks, the good kind--those old-fashioned soft and sugary ones that melt against your tongue. The post office guy and I each took one and thanked him. I started to walk out and he grabbed my hand. Giving it a quick squeeze he said, "Honey, you look like one of them old movie stars." I laughed and kissed his cheek before I floated the rest of the way out to my car.
