More Peppermint, Please

Today has been one of those days that's everything fall should be...the kind of day where you take a big bite of caramel apple in the morning and that feeling stays with you as long as you need it. Walked into the post office around ten, hair piled up all higgledy-piggledy on top of my head, in my favorite pair of vintage 40's slacks and a black turtleneck. An old man came up behind me as I was talking to the post office guy...shooting the breeze while I was getting my stamps. He was beautiful, probably in his late seventies or early eighties. One of these fabulous old guys who still gets dressed to the nines to go downtown. Full head of white hair. He smelled like lavender and shook a little as he walked. All the post office guys seemed to know him...just like they know me. He opened a little bag of peppermint sticks, the good kind--those old-fashioned soft and sugary ones that melt against your tongue. The post office guy and I each took one and thanked him. I started to walk out and he grabbed my hand. Giving it a quick squeeze he said, "Honey, you look like one of them old movie stars." I laughed and kissed his cheek before I floated the rest of the way out to my car.

Higgledy-piggeldy! That's one of my favorite words (phrases?) Others that qualify: pell-mell, argle-bargle, foofaraw.

a beautiful day indeed!

i love that kind of classy old men! i had a coulpe of them come in often at the roadside farm and nursery where i worked last year -- wearing suits and fedora hats, stepping lightly, looking for rare plants for their garden. it was truely inspiring to see.

A lovely moment. Thank you for sharing it.
They say by a certain age you have the face you've earned. I hope that with it comes this kind of grace as well.

I want to be him, and live with Georgia O'Keefe, who was beautiful at 90.

just a quick...

how tumultuously (I like that word too!)happy and warm and hopeful your post has made me feel! I'm just so glad that you weren't away from us here in LJ for too long.
Speaking for myself, you've expanded my horizons and made my world a better place. Not only that, I have been enjoying reading a lot of your LJ friends entries too, so much so that I've added some of them to my friends list. Some, like you, were even kind enough to add me to theirs. (amazingly) I will very likely approach some others too as time goes on - Lot's of good stuff in your planet system Cate and I thank you....

Demanding reader
