All's Fair

We went to the local County Fair this past Saturday. This was the 107th year. I wore my best Minnie Pearl straw hat and overalls. Jacob opted for his Hawaiian shirt and Snoopy hat...always mindful of any festive occasion (this outfit was a particular favorite of the carnies...heh!). Max went for the Jerry Garcia "dancin' around the sun" groove. We stuffed ourselves with bratwurst and sauerkraut, played every game on the midway, and made beards out of our cotton candy. It was a glorious day.

What dears! I love those kinds of memories.

Sounds like a wonderful day!
I used to love county fairs, especially the smallish ones in Maine. (But NOT the rides!!!)

But I can't believe you've been going for 107 years. Is it something in the water there? Do I need to contact my friends Mulder and Scully?

Hehehe! People always say they can't believe I'm 37...little do they know, they're only 70 years off! Call Mulder. Send him to my house immediately. Scully can wait for him in the car. ; )

Scully can wait in MY car.

Could your kids be any cuter?

I want to get stuck at the top of the ferris wheel.

It's the things like these that make it all worth while. Thank you so much for sharing.

You are quite welcome! My photography is not nearly as good as yours, but I tried! : )

The boys are precious! Did they have elephant ears? They're my favorite fair food.

Elephant ears? I don't know what that is. Describe them to me...maybe we call them something else.

They're a pastry, light and airy, deep fried and sprinkled with sugar. Yum! I found a bunch of recipes with slight differences when doing a search. Here's one for you. Enjoy.
ELEPHANT EARS
(Submitted by Delores Habian)

Delores writes: "I got this recipe from the Detroit News Paper. They received it from the fair in Detroit. Elephant Ears are the best part of going to the fair each year. Now we can make our own and not a lot of work. I hope you enjoy!"

INGREDIENTS

1 package active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 cup warm milk
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
3 tablespoons shortening
4 to 4-1/2 cups flour
Oil for deep-frying
Sugar and cinnamon mixed for topping
In large bowl, combine yeast and warm water until dissolved and let stand 10 minutes. Add warm milk, sugar, salt, shortening and 2 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to make the dough soft. Turn out onto floured board and knead until elastic. Add more flour if necessary. Place the dough in greased bowl and flip over so top and bottom has grease on it. Cover with towel until double in size. Divide into 15 oval shape balls and make each one about 1/8-inch thick. Fry one oval at a time in the oil until golden brown and flip over to do other side. Remove from oil. Drain and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon mixture or topping of your choice.

Ha!!! I knew it!!! Yes! I know what those are!! We call them "orejas" here...which is Spanish for...(big surprise!) "ears." I suspected that's what they might be, but I wasn't sure. Those are my favorite pastry of all time! : )

Fabulous! I'm jealous. Sadly, i'm missing the state fair of Texas this year. I made it a tradition to go with friends every year and eat my way from one end to the other. Mmmm, roasted corn on the cob, funnel cakes....oh yeah.

And the petting zoo! They have the best petting zoo, with things like evil-eyed ostriches that lunge at the little food cups you hold out. And don't forget the car show, with all the new models!

That's right! It is State Fair time, isn't it? I didn't realize that until someone mentioned going to the fair before the UT/OU game. This would be one weekend I'd definitely want to avoid...drunken football fans make me want to yak. ; )

Wish I could have made either the Howard or Frederick County fair this year. I love just about everything about them, in all their corny glory.

My favorite ride, the Round Up, has the thrilling effect of being the most spectacular push up bra around. Now if I could only maintain that without the spinning....

Do y'all have a tractor pull? Another fave for me.

[identity profile] catelin.livejournal.com 2001-10-05 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! I'll definitely have to try the push-up bra effect! I am partial to small town stuff as well...and yep, there was a tractor pull. : )

I have a shirt almost the same as your sons...

Both of my boys have this thing for funky shirts...it's a sign of future greatness, I'm sure. : )

They've grown so much, haven't they? The world is spinning under our feet, old girl...and we'll wake up tomorrow with full-grown kids. We'll definitely have a road trip this summer to get them all together again for watermelon and playing in the sprinklers! I'm decided on that for sure.

Your boys are gorgeous! Sounds like a blast! I wish we had things like that here in Louisiana.
