Somebody got me thinking about cops today. Not that I don't think about them everyday since I work with them, but I was thinking more about them today after reading something that's so full of the stereotype cop bullshit that I won't even bore myself repeating it. Maybe I take it too personally. My experience with cops has been, for the most part, good. That doesn't mean some of them aren't shitheels...I've known a few of those too. Overall, though, I've found law enforcement to be an under-appreciated and noble profession. My dad was a cop for most of my early childhood. He got out of it and went back to school. He had a partner named Jack. I don't remember much about him other than that he laughed a lot and was always nice to me. You can find him here. I work with honest, kind-hearted, straight-up decent people everyday who happen to be cops. I like them, I laugh with them, I cry with them, and I worry about them. It hasn't been very long since the last cop's funeral that I went to...so pardon me for not laughing at the fucking donut jokes.

I have to agree with you. Most people who don't like cops have a reason for not wanting them around, whether they want to admit to it or not. I'm a good boy, and have many friends who are police officers. I've got no problem with them. Other than a few, that is. There are those who take the job because they want to make a difference, and then there are those who do it just for the rush of being in power.

Yeah, there's nothing worse than a bully...and really nothing worse than a bully with a badge. I've dealt with a few of those (mostly in the form of shit-canning their cases), but they are fewer and futher between than most people realize. Unfortunately, they seem to be the ones the media pays the most attention to.

i used to work for a guy whose son, a new cop, while attending to a drunk driving accident, was run over by another drunk who was so shitfaced she blew right through all the cones and flares & everything. the joke in texas is you have to be old enough to drink *and* drive there. to me the prevalence of it was intolerably disgusting. anyway, i didn't work for him when it happened but it was felt everywhere in austin when it happened. dwi pisses me off in a big way; but this temper of mine, i get so furious i tend to just start yelling and tell the shitforbrains have fun ramming that pinhead skull of yours through your windshield.. rather than muscle up the compassion to actually fight them for their keys or just be a more productive pain in their ass about it. thinking about it now one idea i never though of was to take my own keys out and start destroying their paint job until they handed theirs over -- texans are really freaky about the paint jobs on their cars. more than once someone at happy hour would tell me about this guy i worked for and how much he loved his son and how proud of him he was when he graduated from academy and the person telling me about it would end up weeping. pretty heavy. the woman who ran him over was a amazing in her denial of responsibility, playing some twisted victim card i have no idea how her logic worked, but she was easily one of the most despised people in the local news.

I too have a particular dislike for drunk drivers. I got hit by a drunk driver on my way to the grocery store when I was eight months pregnant with my oldest son. I was at a stoplight and he rammed me from behind going about 50mph. He never even hit his brakes. He blew almost a .30...and he was driving a fuckin' Mercedes! I guess he spent so much on car payments he couldn't afford the cab fare. It was a nightmarish experience, to say the least. We're pretty hard on DWI's where I work, but I know what you mean...Texas definitely has a big problem with the double-standard (on many issues).

I remember that case. I remember seeing that woman crying on the stand on the local news, and it just make my stomach twist to hear her trying to make herself out the victim. She killed someone through her own stupidity and she didn't think she deserved a punishment? that's pretty damn sick.

It's a damn shame that we don't pay our police better and give them more respsect. There are a lot of good cops out there. (Like the ones who came to get my PCP-freaking sister the night she tried to kill my mom.) Anyone who has the dedication to serve in such a demanding and dangerous way deserves it.

*7 of the escaped Texas convicts have been captured! Another killed himself in a standoff.*
