Afternoon

I had coffee and tiramisu today with the even lovelier in person [livejournal.com profile] tamperevident. I was highly flattered and amused when the cute Italian barista asked if we were "a couple." That definitely beat being mistaken for the mother or the much older sister. I had an interesting exchange at the candy counter of a small pharmacy nearby beforehand. The lady behind the counter asked my name and wanted to know "what I was" because she had been certain that I was off-the-boat Irish...until I opened my mouth off course...then it was clear that I was off-the-horse Texan. She then looked me over and said I looked like I had some Native American in me and when I answered "probably Shawnee" she gave me a maple candy.

"Here you go," she said, "In celebration of your Native American heritage. You know, they didn't have maple in Europe. That was a completely native sweetener." We talked about Patrica Highsmith (the counter lady's name was Patricia...somehow we got off onto Patricia Highsmith...I have no idea how, really) and I left with four chocolate covered strawberries and a Valentine's Day card.

[livejournal.com profile] tamperevident said something that really struck a chord with me today. Life is not always linear. I drove all the way home thinking about the simple truth of that. It made me realize that I am perfectly happy with my imperfect life.

Resist! Resist! Resist!!!!!! Meeting M. yesterday made me think of the first day that we met at Metro for coffee, back when I still smoked. Ahhhh...I think those were the last good cigarettes I had. So glad we're friends, little princess. Save all your pennies so you can visit soon!
