1. How tall are you?
Five feet, two inches. I always think of myself as much taller, until I stand next to just about anyone but my kids.
2. If you could own one thing that hasn't been invented yet, what would it be?
A transporter (hold the Shatner, please) that could take me anywhere I want to go in a matter of seconds.
3. One year in prison for something you didn't do or say you did it to get a year's probation?
Probation, without a doubt.
4. Do you believe human beings are instinctively monogamous? Why?
Absolutely not. When we are monogamous, it is in spite of our instincts.
5. Describe the immediate area surrounding your computer.
My desk in the kitchen looks out an open bay window with the smell of a thunderstorm brewing. There are, in no particular order, on my desk: postcards, several chapbooks, photos of my kids, a phone, pens, a journal, tarot cards, a glass of wine, and a stapler. Next to the desk is a big basket of stationary that sits on the floor next to a bookcase full of books.
6. You're having a dinner party with 6 well-known, currently living people. Who do you invite?
Angelica Huston, Bruno Ganz, Sam Shepard, Molly Ivins, Lyle Lovett, and Maya Angelou.
7. Name an article of clothing or an accessory that you don't have but would like to own.
A really nice, heavy pair of turquoise and silver earrings.
8. Name 3 things you'd like to do in this lifetime but haven't yet.
Travel in Europe and South America
Publish a collection of my short stories
Dance at my sons' weddings
9. If you could return to life (after death) as an adult, retaining the knowledge you gained in this lifetime, and you could choose a different local and era, where and when would that be?
Hmmm....probably Los Angeles in the late thirties, early forties.
10. Who cooked the best breakfast you ever had? What was it?
The best breakfast is cooked by me and my kids about once a month. We make chocolate chip pancakes and vanilla milkshakes, and have our breakfast in the backyard.
11. Where do you go to meditate and think?
Outside under my trees.
12. Share a lesson you've learned.
Love is a double-edged sword.
13. What does your favorite pair of shoes look like?
A pair of ratty old Doc Marten boots with flowers on them.
14. If you could commit one crime - one free crime, no consequences - what would it be?
I would kidnap every single baby from every child abuse case I've ever had and raise them myself or give them to people who would love them like they deserve.
15. Do you believe in heaven? Even if you don't, if you could design it, what would it look like?
Heaven would be like life, except my grandmother would be in it.
16. Tell me about someone I probably don't know about.
Carmell Jones was a jazz trumpeter that played with some of the big names, but never became nearly as popular as he really deserved to be. He became disenchanted with the States and the New York jazz scene in the mid-sixties. He left the States and lived in Europe until his death in 1996. He was fabulous.
17. What are the things you like best about your life RIGHT NOW?
My children are happy, healthy, and growing like weeds.
I have a house that I could have only dreamed about.
I'm making peace with my place in the world.
18. What would you like to be doing with your life 5 years from now?
I would like to be working less, writing more, and spending more time with my kids.
19. Go for a mental walk and pick up 5 imaginary objects. What did you get?
An old pocket watch that plays a tune
A piece of moss
An arrowhead
A guinea hen feather
A handful of acorns
20. If I ask you to build something, what's the first thing that came to your mind?
A table with leaves in it.
